Delhi Election: Vote For Change...

Delhi Elections 2025: A Personal Perspective on the Battle for the Capital

Dr Sunil S Rana

Being born and brought up in Delhi, I have seen this city evolve over decades; through its highs and lows, its development, and its growing pains. My journey of life began in Chanakyapuri, one of the most well-planned areas of the capital, but later, after my father was allotted a government quarter, we moved to the Police Colony in Andrews Ganj, near South Extension. I spent the first thirty years of my life there, watching Delhi change year after year, before finally shifting to Vasant Kunj. This city is not just my home; it is my witness to history, a living entity that has seen multiple governments come and go, each leaving its mark; sometimes positive, sometimes negative.

I have seen Delhi before the grand flyovers, before the Metro, before the shopping malls that now dot every corner of the city. Back in the day, Delhi was a city of large open spaces, vibrant markets, and a sense of exclusivity for its residents. But with development came challenges, and with progress came migration. It was during the tenure of Ms. Sheila Dikshit that Delhi truly transformed; new roads, overbridges, and a Metro network that was a game changer for public transportation. However, as infrastructure improved, a massive influx of laborers and migrants from neighboring states and even from Bangladesh began altering the social and economic fabric of the city.

Today, as we stand on the cusp of another Delhi Assembly election, the city finds itself at a crossroads. The upcoming polls are not just about electing a government; they are about determining the future of this city; whether it will continue on a path of deteriorating governance and unchecked corruption or see a decisive shift towards structured growth and real development. The three major parties; AAP, BJP, and Congress-- are at loggerheads, each presenting a vision, but only one can lead Delhi into a brighter future.

The Issues That Matter to Delhiites Like Me

For someone who has lived in Delhi since birth, I can say with conviction that the problems we are facing today are worse than ever before. The core issues impacting every resident, including me, are:

1. Water Crisis and Pollution

Delhi's water crisis is not a recent problem, but under the AAP government, it has reached alarming levels. Clean drinking water has become a privilege rather than a right. Entire localities are dependent on water tankers, which are themselves controlled by a corrupt mafia. The Yamuna, once a sacred river, is now a toxic drain. I remember when it still had some life left, but today, it stinks of governmental neglect. AAP had promised clean water, yet today, we see reports of water laced with ammonia and harmful chemicals flowing through our taps.

2. Overpopulation and Illegal Immigration

Delhi, once a city of open spaces and manageable crowds, is now bursting at the seams. During my early years in Andrews Ganj, there was a distinct identity to the capital; a sense of belonging for Delhiites. But as migration from neighboring states and even foreign nationals (especially Rohingyas and Bangladeshis) increased, the demographic balance shifted. With them came the burden on public hospitals, schools, and other essential services. While every human deserves basic rights, it is unjust when the original residents of Delhi have to struggle to access these services because of unregulated immigration. The AAP government has turned a blind eye to this issue, allowing illegal settlements to mushroom across the city.

3. Unemployment and Crime Surge

Delhi was once a city where opportunities flourished, but today, it faces a severe unemployment crisis. I have seen job opportunities shrink over the years, and with joblessness comes crime. The rise in gang wars, snatching incidents, and crimes against women is deeply worrying. There was a time when I could walk freely in Delhi without a second thought; today, there is always an underlying fear. Women’s safety is a serious concern, and despite all the rhetoric, AAP has failed to implement any real change in law enforcement.

4. Crumbling Infrastructure and Flooding Roads

I still recall how the first flyovers and road expansions gave Delhi a modern, metropolitan look, but today, despite all this development, we are stuck in massive traffic jams, and roads turn into rivers at the slightest rainfall. The irony is that the very party (AAP) that came to power on the promise of fixing Delhi’s infrastructure has only made it worse. Instead of addressing these problems, they spend more time blaming the BJP-led central government for their failures.

5. Corruption and Misgovernance

I have witnessed multiple governments come and go, but never have I seen the level of blatant corruption as in the past decade. The liquor scam, the failing public health schemes, the lack of accountability-- all point towards an administration that has put self-interest above governance. When I see politicians like Arvind Kejriwal making grand promises but getting entangled in corruption cases, it angers me as a Delhiite who wants to see honest leadership. The resignation of Kejriwal amid corruption charges only adds weight to the claims that AAP has failed Delhi.

Who Can Truly Shape Delhi’s Future?

In this heated political climate, AAP and Congress have done nothing but hurl abuses at each other, shifting blame rather than taking responsibility. This kind of politics does not benefit the common man. Congress, once a formidable force in Delhi, has now become irrelevant, struggling to even keep its voter base intact. AAP, which came to power as a party of the common people, has lost credibility due to corruption, arrogance, and an overall failure in governance.

That leaves us with the BJP-- the only party that has the structural capacity to bring real change to Delhi. I believe that if BJP wins the Delhi elections and aligns with the central government, we will finally see what a "double-engine sarkar" can achieve. The BJP under Narendra Modi has a track record of development, be it in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, or even major national projects like highways, AIIMS expansions, and the Digital India initiative. Modi's vision for Delhi is clear--make it a world-class city with better infrastructure, a cleaner Yamuna, safer streets, and controlled migration.

AAP has ruled for too long on false promises, Congress is a shadow of its former self, and it is time for BJP to take the reins of Delhi to integrate it with national progress. A city like Delhi, which houses the seat of power of the world's largest democracy, deserves better governance, not petty politics.

The Verdict: A Golden Opportunity for BJP

If BJP comes to power in Delhi, it will have the opportunity to undo the years of misgovernance and set the city on a path of structured growth. The party's governance model has shown success in multiple states, and with its strong leadership and central government backing, it can truly transform Delhi into a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous city.

As someone who has spent their entire life in Delhi, I want to see it flourish again-- not just as a city of historical significance but as a modern capital that is inclusive, secure, and developed. The upcoming elections are more than just a political battle; they are a chance to reclaim the lost glory of Delhi and make it a city we can all be proud of once again.

This time, let’s vote not for rhetoric, but for real change.

BJP's Victory...

BJP’s Historic Win in Delhi: A Victory of Strategy, Hard Work, and People’s Will. By Dr Sunil S Rana  "Politics is not a game. It is an earnest business." – Winston Churchill. Delhi has spoken, and it has spoken decisively. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections, marking a significant political shift in the national capital after more than two decades. While some political analysts and Congress loyalists are trying to paint this as a strategic "revenge" by the Congress against AAP, the truth is far from it. BJP’s win was not a matter of chance or arithmetic manipulation; it was a well-planned, systematically executed campaign that resonated with the people of Delhi. The Myth of Congress’s "Vote Cutting" Strategy. A common argument floating around is that BJP won because Congress strategically cut into AAP’s vote share. However, this is nothing more than a lazy excuse to dismiss the real reasons be...
